Heal It Right: The Tattoo Aftercare Guide

Heal your new tattoo so it stays bright and sharp.

A healed floral piece, with the basics: balm and soap

For the first 2–4 weeks, your tattoo is an open wound.

How you treat it decides whether lines stay crisp and color stays bold.

Most fading and patchy healing comes from three things: over-moisturizing, picking, and sun.

Day by day

What to do, and what's normal, at each stage.

  1. Hours 0–24

    • Leave the artist's wrap on as long as your artist said: usually 2–24 hours, or 3–5 days for film/second-skin wraps.
    • Remove it gently, wash with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.
    • Pat dry with a clean paper towel.

  2. Days 1–3

    • Wash 2–3 times a day.
    • Apply a very thin layer of unscented aftercare balm or lotion.
    • Some oozing of plasma and ink is normal.
  3. Days 4–14

    • Peeling and itching begin. Do not pick, scratch or peel.
    • For itch, lightly tap it or apply lotion.
    • Keep moisturizing thinly.
  4. Weeks 2–4

The surface looks healed but may look cloudy or shiny. That's normal while the deeper skin finishes.
  5. After 4 weeks

Healed. Use SPF 30+ sunscreen on it forever to keep the color.

Questions I hear most.

Can I shower?

Yes. Short, lukewarm showers, no soaking.

When can I go to the gym?

Light activity after 48 hours. Keep it clean and free of tight fabric.

Why does it look dull?

That's the normal "milky" stage, around weeks 2–3.

Do I need a touch-up?

Some spots need one after full healing. Many artists offer free touch-ups within a few months.
